Mimic is the Mirage skeleton key boss that drops highly sought-after rings for all schools. This high-level, gold key boss is a fun challenge with worthwhile rewards, including a pet version of itself. The rings have become a common replacement for Aphrodite's, but are they worth it? Take a look for yourself and find out.
Verboten Mimic
Mimic is a cheating skeleton key boss located in Aggrobah in Mirage. He can take on the form of five past foes and their cheats, but with improved effectiveness. Learn more about Mimic's cheats in a guide here.
Ring Drops
Mimic doesn't drop a whole lot worth noting besides his Mini Mimic pet and rings. It seems like they drop with some regularity, so it's just a matter of getting the one for your school.
Aphrodite Comparisons
I really want to draw attention to these comparisons. Aphrodite is similar to Mimic in the sense that it's a gold skeleton key boss that requires no additional fights to access. Except Aphrodite also drops a bunch of other stuff (some of which is quite useful). However, I've seen a lot of good rings replaced by Mimic drops, when Mimic drops aren't necessarily the best. Take a look for yourself and decide what the case may be for your play style and your school.
Why They Matter
Over the course of this month, I'll be doing a sort of "Significant Gear Series" that covers the most important sets and items that have defined where wizards farm, how they build their setups, and more. This will be an opportunity to compare stats and discuss structure. We'll cover everything from Waterworks to Darkmoor to some of the more recent sets. In the future, we may go further back.
As common as Mimic's rings are, not all of them beat existing rings. What's nice about Mimic is that it's a great boss to fight. If you need a team, head over to the kiosk and team up. The thing about Mimic is that there are some slightly annoying cheats that you've got to work around, but he's definitely doable. You'll have fun with a random team and you shouldn't have any problem winning the battle. I haven't fought Aphrodite since hitting max level, but I don't remember anything in Darkmoor being quite so enjoyable. That's the other thing - if you're not into Darkmoor farming, Mimic's ring is a good alternative.
The other key difference between these rings and Aphrodite's, as you'll see from the comparisons, is that Mimic's rings offer critical instead of block. The block for only two schools on Aphrodite's rings isn't one of its primary selling points, but the critical on Mimic's rings is a great bonus. One of the big issues with Mimic rings is their lack of power pip chance. A lot of pieces of gear recently have been giving this stat up, and it's important to be able to gain power pips on a regular basis. You can make sacrifices in your setup, but not on every piece of gear. This is an important consideration in making your ring choice.
