Rasputin, in the Horizon Hold, reveals himself as The Rat, one of Grandfather Spider's three children. He intends to break the sky anchor and destroy the Spiral. (There sure are a lot of surprise, unguarded mechanisms for destroying the Spiral, huh? All you need to do to break the sky anchor: punch it really hard.) The Rat drops some great gear for wizards - take a look.
The Rat
Rasputin, or The Rat, is a rank 16 Shadow boss with 35,000 health in the Horizon Hold, the final dungeon of Polaris. This is a single fight, so you'll be able to battle or farm The Rat without having to defeat anyone else first. Rasputin, like many end-world bosses, has a chest that you can throw crowns into for a chance at additional gear. While Rasputin drops a variety of items for wizards, this article focuses on the significant ones: Hats, boots, wands, and decks. Note that the hats also drop from Baba Yaga The decks are also dropped by other bosses leading up to Rasputin, but Rasputin tends to drop them more often.
Decks do not come in tiers. Instead, there are three decks for each school (and three universal decks) which each have identical stats but offer a different type of jewel slot. The use of different words in the name of the deck corresponds to the jewel slot. Here's how it works - Horizon Hold: Tear; Rasputin: Triangle; Arcanum Exile: Square. On the universal set, the Rasputin (triangle) deck is instead named with "Chief Advisor."
Understanding Rasputin Gear Tiers
The gear dropped by The Rat comes in tiers, like with Darkmoor gear. This guide covers only the top tier of items - it's really the only relevant tier given the number of additional options now available. Just so you're aware, the name is what gives away the tier. Here's how it work - Majoris: Tier 1; Titan Warrior: Tier 2; Borealis: Tier 3. Just to make things extra confusing, the top tier set for the universal gear is named with both "Majoris" and Borealis" (where tier 3 of the universal gear is named only with "Borealis"). Tier 1 is the best of the tiers.Decks do not come in tiers. Why They Matter
For awhile now, particularly a month or two ago, I've been focusing on significant gear throughout the game, including its popularity, impact, and how it fits into setups compared to other gear. The series has been on a bit of a hiatus as I've been working on obtaining missing gear pieces, but I'm nearing completion and there'll be a few more of these popping up, likely this month.
Polaris was the first world to kick off this new gear trend of mostly balanced boots, aggressive hats, and defensive robes. While the idea was that together they would create a balanced set, no one saw (or sees) any of the robes as being better than what was already available, so they're largely forgotten.
When Polaris was released, it was common to see hats and boots swapped in for pieces of Darkmoor gear, which was a mistake in my opinion. However, this was one of the first instances where there was new gear clearly structured like end-game pieces but that wasn't distinctly the best. These items were more aggressive but strategies in general were and are shifting in that direction.
The decks remain to be a good choice, though alternatives have not been particularly difficult to come by since the release of Polaris. The wands are the one item here which really isn't the best available - or anywhere close - for its level. However, besides the cool appearance of the wands, they're still in circulation among some max-level wizards, especially those who aren't willing to shell out the crowns for pack wands.
